On this week's episode of My Happy Place, Grammy®, Emmy® and three-time Tony® Award winner Billy Porter travels to his happy place — Mykonos, Greece. This destination holds deep meaning for Billy, as it's where he first felt a true sense of freedom and belonging.
Inside CNN sat down with Billy Porter ahead of tonight's episode to explore why Greece holds such a special place in his heart.
How did you react when you first learned that you would be a host for My Happy Place?
I was honored and humbled that CNN wanted me to host. Very prestigious!
What do you believe makes Greece, particularly an island like Mykonos, a "happy place" for queer individuals seeking freedom and acceptance?
Mykonos has catered to the queer community for years. I first encountered this stunning island while on a vacation with the very popular gay vacation company called Atlantis Events back in 2000. I found the spaces were intentional in their outreach to us. And that created a freedom of spirit that I'll never forget.
In this episode, you said, "Your whole life has been a plan." What was it like to have the chance to simply be free and explore?
It's always amazing when I can break from the rigorous schedule of my daily life. As a freelance artist, those moments come few and far between.
